I grew up outside Hull, Illinois, on a farm.
Long before I started working in technology, I learned lessons there that still guide how I think about healthcare IT today.
On a farm, equipment is not a luxury. It is what keeps the work moving. If the tractor does not start, the job does not get done. If the combine breaks during harvest, you lose time, money, and momentum at the worst possible moment.
You learn fast that waiting for something to fail is not a great plan.
Technology works the same way, especially in healthcare.
For a rural hospital, clinic, physician practice, specialty provider, nursing home, assisted living community, behavioral health provider, rehabilitation clinic, public health department, or nonprofit healthcare organization, technology is not just about convenience. It supports patient care, scheduling, charting, medication workflows, lab access, billing, communication, compliance, and day-to-day operations.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating technology like a light switch. If the computers turn on and the internet works, everything must be fine.
But most technology problems do not show up all at once.
They build slowly.
A server runs longer than it should. A firewall gets older and stops receiving updates. A backup system says it completed, but nobody has tested a restore in months. A workstation at the nurses station starts acting strange, but the team works around it because everyone is busy. Microsoft 365 accounts are active, but nobody has reviewed access, security settings, or shared mailboxes in a long time.
Then one day, something fails.
Now the practice is down. Employees are frustrated. Patients are waiting. Providers cannot get to the information they need. The issue that could have been handled with planning becomes an emergency.
In healthcare, that kind of disruption is more than an inconvenience. It can slow patient intake, interrupt communication between staff, delay billing, affect referrals, and create real stress for administrators who are already dealing with staffing, reimbursement, and compliance pressure.

Backups can look fine on a dashboard and still fail when you need them. Until a restore has been tested, you do not really know if your patient data, billing records, shared files, or operational documents can come back.
That is why maintenance matters.
Another lesson from the farm was that everything depended on something else.
If one part failed, it could slow down the whole operation. A small issue at the wrong time could affect the entire day, or the entire season.
Healthcare technology is no different.
Your computers depend on your network. Your network depends on your internet connection. Your staff depends on Microsoft 365, email, cloud software, printers, phones, shared files, electronic health record access, secure remote access, and reliable protection for patient data.
When one piece stops working, employee efficiency can come to a halt.

That does not mean you need to buy every new tool that comes out.
It means you need a practical plan.
