I grew up outside Hull, Illinois, on a farm.
Long before I owned an IT company, I learned lessons that still shape how I look at technology, business, and now the way healthcare organizations depend on reliable systems.
On a farm, equipment is not a luxury. It is what keeps the whole operation moving.
If the tractor will not start, the work does not get done. If the combine goes down during harvest, you are losing time, money, and daylight. You learn fast that waiting for something to fail is a bad plan.
Technology works the same way in healthcare.
If the EHR will not load, patient care slows down. If the phones are down, patients cannot reach the office. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, nurses, providers, and front desk staff all feel it. If backups fail after a cyberattack, a bad day can become a serious business continuity problem.
One of the biggest mistakes I see healthcare leaders make is treating technology like a light switch. If the computers turn on and the internet works, everything must be fine.
That sounds reasonable until it is not.
Most technology problems do not show up all at once. They build slowly. A slow workstation here. A backup error there. A firewall that has not been updated. A server that is still running, but is well past the point where it should have been replaced.
Then one day, the small issues become a big problem.

On the farm, we did not wait until a machine was completely broken before paying attention to it. We changed fluids. We checked batteries. We replaced worn belts. We listened for strange sounds. We fixed little things before they turned into expensive repairs.
Preventive maintenance was not exciting.
But it saved time, money, and a lot of frustration.
Healthcare technology needs that same mindset.
A server may still be running, but if it is years beyond its expected life, it is a risk. A firewall may still be plugged in, but if it no longer gets security updates, it is a weakness. Backups may look like they are working, but if nobody has tested them, you do not really know if they will protect patient information or restore operations when it matters.
That is where many organizations get caught.
They assume things are fine because nothing has failed yet.
But hope is not a technology strategy, especially in healthcare.
Another thing I learned growing up on a farm is that everything is connected. One bad part can slow down the whole operation.
The same is true in your healthcare organization.
Your computers rely on your network. Your network relies on your internet. Your staff relies on email, EHR systems, imaging tools, cloud platforms, shared files, printers, phones, secure remote access, and protected patient data.
When one part breaks, the impact can spread fast.
A bad switch can stop a department. A weak Wi-Fi setup can slow down the entire clinic. A failed backup can turn downtime into a continuity of care issue. A compromised email account can create risk for patients, providers, vendors, and your HIPAA compliance efforts.

Healthcare administrators should look at technology the same way.
The organizations with the fewest disruptions are usually not lucky. They are prepared.
They have a plan for upgrades. They know when hardware is getting old. They review cybersecurity before something bad happens. They test backups. They train employees. They fix small issues before those issues become emergencies.

Take care of the things that take care of you.

That is a lesson I learned on a farm outside Hull, Illinois, and it is still one of the best technology lessons I know.
